Compressed Air System Efficiency Factors: System Pressure Management

Determining if a system is experiencing a pressure or a flow problem is important in saving life cycle costs. Instead of increasing pressure or operating a larger compressor, it is better to identify and fix causes of pressure drops and flow chokepoints. Lowering pressure also lowers artificial demand as the amount of air lost to leaks is reduced and unnecessary usage of air is avoided. Generally, it is better to minimize system pressure to the lowest possible for optimized airflow and greater energy savings. This can be done by turning down pressure gradually, one psi a day, until the lowest workable pressure that can sustain plant operations. Other ways of improving pressure management include reducing sharp bends and elbows in distribution piping, employing a closed-loop header layout, installing distribution piping with a correct diameter, setting-up low-pressure-drop filters and maintaining these filters regularly.
